What is the JSON to CSV Converter?
CSV (comma-separated values) is the lowest common denominator for tabular data: every spreadsheet, database import tool and analytics platform can read it. JSON, on the other hand, is hierarchical. Converting between them means deciding how objects become rows and how fields become columns.
This converter expects an array of objects, which is how most APIs return lists of records. It collects the union of all keys to build the header row, then writes one line per object. Nested objects can be flattened into dotted column names such as address.city, and values that contain delimiters, quotes or line breaks are quoted according to RFC 4180.
When to use the JSON to CSV Converter
Typical uses include handing API data to a non-technical colleague who works in Excel, importing records into a CRM or email platform that only accepts CSV, and producing quick reports from a database export saved as JSON. Analysts also convert JSON logs to CSV to filter and pivot them in a spreadsheet. It is a fast alternative to writing a one-off script when you only need to convert a file once. For recurring exports, treat the converter as a way to prototype the column layout before you automate the process in code.
How to use the JSON to CSV Converter
- Paste a JSON array of objects, for example an API response.
- Pick a delimiter: comma, semicolon, tab or pipe. Semicolons are common in European Excel installs.
- Choose whether to include a header row and whether to flatten nested objects.
- Press Convert and review the CSV preview.
- Copy the CSV or download it as a
.csvfile and open it in your spreadsheet.
Examples
Input JSON:
[
{"id": 1, "name": "Ada Lovelace", "address": {"city": "London"}},
{"id": 2, "name": "Grace \"Amazing\" Hopper", "address": {"city": "New York"}}
]CSV output with flattening enabled:
id,name,address.city
1,Ada Lovelace,London
2,"Grace ""Amazing"" Hopper",New YorkCommon errors and tips
- The input must be an array. If your data is wrapped like
{"items": [...]}, paste only the inner array. - Records with missing keys produce empty cells rather than shifting columns.
- Arrays inside a record cannot become a single cell cleanly; they are written as a JSON string so no information is lost.
- If Excel shows garbled accents, import the file as UTF-8 rather than double-clicking it.
- Long numeric identifiers such as phone numbers may be reformatted by spreadsheets; import the column as text.
Privacy: runs entirely in your browser
Customer exports and internal reports are converted locally, so the records you paste are never transmitted anywhere. This tool runs entirely in your browser: nothing you enter is uploaded, stored or logged on our servers, and it keeps working even if you go offline after the page has loaded.
Frequently asked questions
What JSON structure works best for conversion?
[{"id":1,"name":"A"},{"id":2,"name":"B"}]. Differences in keys are handled by creating columns for every key found. How are nested objects handled?
address.city. With it off, the nested object is stored as a JSON string in a single cell. Why do my commas break the columns in Excel?
Values containing the delimiter must be quoted. This tool quotes them automatically; if Excel still misreads the file, import it with the correct delimiter selected.
Can I convert CSV back to JSON?
Yes. Switch the direction to CSV to JSON, and the first row is used as the property names for every record.
