Clean an image without touching the picture

This tool rewrites the file without its embedded metadata: C2PA Content Credentials, XMP and IPTC data, EXIF (camera, date and GPS location), PNG text chunks with saved prompts, and comments. The pixels are copied byte for byte, so there is no re-encoding and no quality loss. The colour profile, animation frames and a JPEG's rotation flag are kept so the image looks exactly the same.

How to remove the metadata

  1. Drop your images on the box above, or press Choose images.
  2. Wait a moment while each file is cleaned.
  3. Press Download clean image. The file is named like the original with -clean added.
  4. Not sure what your image carries? Use the AI Image Metadata Checker first.

Why remove metadata?

  • Privacy: photos can reveal where and when they were taken and which device was used.
  • Your workflow: prompts, seeds and model names saved in a PNG are often not meant to be shared.
  • Clean files: smaller files with nothing hidden inside.

Please be honest about AI

AI labels exist so viewers can tell how an image was made. Removing them is fine for privacy and housekeeping, but some platforms, clients and countries require AI-generated content to be disclosed. That duty stays with whoever publishes the image.

What it can and cannot do

  • It reads metadata only: C2PA Content Credentials, the IPTC / XMP “digital source type” label, generator names written into the file, and the prompt or settings blocks some Stable Diffusion tools save inside PNG files.
  • It cannot see invisible watermarks that are woven into the pixels themselves (for example Google SynthID), so a file with no labels can still have been made with AI.
  • Supported formats: JPEG, PNG, WebP and GIF, up to 8 MB per image, ten images at a time.

Your images

Unlike our other tools, the image is sent to our server so it can be read. It is processed in memory, never saved to disk or a database and never shared. Requests are rate limited to keep the service free for everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Does removing metadata reduce image quality?

No. The pixel data is copied unchanged; only the metadata blocks are left out. The file is not re-compressed.

Will the image rotate wrongly after cleaning?

No. For JPEG the small orientation flag is kept so phone photos still show upright.

Does this remove invisible AI watermarks such as SynthID?

No. Only metadata is removed. Watermarks embedded in the pixels are not touched.

Is my image stored on your server?

No. It is processed in memory and discarded as soon as the cleaned file is returned.

Which formats work?

JPEG, PNG, WebP and GIF, up to 8 MB each. AVIF and other formats can be checked but not cleaned yet.
