Microsoft began rolling out Windows 11 version 26H2, also called the Windows 11 2026 Update, on September 29, 2026. If you expect a big redesign, you will be disappointed. This is a lightweight update. The real news is that it gives your PC a fresh support period and switches on features that have been arriving gradually all year.
What 26H2 actually is
Windows 11 26H2 shares the same codebase as versions 25H2 and 24H2. Microsoft delivers it as an enablement package, a small download that turns on features already installed on your PC. That is why Microsoft describes it as a predictable, low disruption update, and why there are no new hardware requirements for PCs already running a supported version of Windows 11.

Why it matters: a new support clock
The biggest practical change is support. Moving to 26H2 resets the servicing lifecycle. According to TweakTown, Windows 11 Home and Pro get 24 more months of support, running to October 2028. Windows Central reports commercial customers get 36 months. IT-Connect notes that 26H2 arrived about two weeks before support for 24H2 on Home and Pro editions was due to end, which was October 13, 2026.
What is new
Start menu and taskbar. A redesigned taskbar and Start menu, with options to reposition the taskbar and customize how both look. These arrived in the Release Preview build and are enabled by default in 26H2.
Search. Windows Search can be customized to show only the results you want, and to leave out ads.
File Explorer and right click menu. Performance and polish improvements to both.
Security. Enhanced Windows Hello biometric sign in protection on more PCs, and Smart App Control that can now be switched on or off without reinstalling Windows.
IT features. Windows Autopilot device preparation supports device association, and Remote Server Administration Tools now run on Arm64 PCs.
Many of these features were already rolling out to 24H2 and 25H2 PCs before 26H2 shipped. Windows Central says 26H2 is at feature parity with 25H2, so do not expect something exclusive to this version.
How to get it
Back up your important files first.
Open Settings, then Windows Update.
If 26H2 is offered for your PC, select the download and install option. It is available to compatible PCs running 24H2 or 25H2.
Restart when prompted. The installation is short because only the enablement package needs to apply.
If you do not see the update, your PC may not be in the current rollout wave yet. Microsoft staggers availability, so check again in a few days.
Should you install it?
Yes, for most people. The update is small, needs no new hardware and extends how long your PC receives security updates. The exception is a business PC with strict change control, where IT teams may prefer to test first. Microsoft says validating 26H2 should take less effort than a traditional feature update.
